SUKKUR: The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged the international community on Saturday to take action to assist Pakistan in overcoming the difficulties brought on by the devastating floods and to give support in the reconstruction of climate-resilient infrastructure.
He made the comments today in Sukkur after getting a thorough briefing on the damage caused by the floods in the province from Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah.
According to the UN Secretary-General, Pakistan is among the nations that need help to restore resilient infrastructure and communities to withstand future calamities. He also highlighted the need to reduce pollution.
The UNSG expressed solidarity with Pakistan and said that the organization would use all of its resources to inform people about the flood situation there and to implore those with the means to help Pakistan during these trying times.
Along with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the secretary general flew over the flood-affected districts and described the destruction as "unimaginable."
PM Shehbaz and the UNSG came in Sukkur to see the aid and rescue efforts taking place in the flood-affected area and to evaluate the harm the calamity had done.
The two leaders are traveling with members of the federal government as well as a UN mission.
From Sukkur, the two leaders traveled to Usta Muhammad Tehsil in the Jaffarabad district, where they saw flood victims.
Later, they are expected to go to Larkana, Sindh, where they will meet those impacted by the disaster.
