According to the Pentagon, the $450 million deal would maintain Pakistan's F-16 force.
WASHINGTON: In a significant milestone, the Pentagon said Wednesday that the US State Department has approved the prospective sale of F-16 fighter aircraft sustainment and related components to Pakistan in a transaction valued at up to $450 million. The primary contractor will be Lockheed Martin Corp, said the Pentagon.
"The State Department has made a determination approving a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of Pakistan of F-16 Case for Sustainment and related equipment for an estimated cost of $450 million," according to a statement issued by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency.
According to the statement, the release includes operational, technical, and logistical support for Pakistan's F-16 aircraft from the US government and contractors. The announcement also said that Pakistan would not get any additional capabilities, weapons, or ammunition due to this deal.
This proposed sale will assist the foreign policy and national security goals of the US by enabling Pakistan to sustain compatibility with US and partner forces in existing counterterrorism actions and in preparation for future emergency operations, the US government's agency underlined.
It said that the planned sale will maintain Pakistan's F-16 fleet, which has a significant air-to-ground capability and significantly enhances Pakistan's ability to assist counterterrorism operations. It said that Pakistan will have no trouble incorporating these products and services into its military forces.
It said that the fundamental military balance in the area won't be affected by the proposed sale of this assistance and equipment.
The proposed sale won't have a bad influence on the US military's readiness, it was said.
